The votes are in and now Albertans will have a new alternative when choosing new number plates for their vehicles.
The Department of Transport (DoT) has collated the 48,000 votes taken from an online poll of state residents, which was set up to help select new number plates to represent vehicles that are environmentally friendly.
The new plates, which were up against five other contenders, has green lettering on top of a white background with a picture of a wild rose in the centre.
According to DoT minister, the Peter Mills, the government is planning to have one out of every 10 non-commercial road vehicles in Alberta to be electric sort by 2030.
"Hopefully green number plates will encourage Albertans to think of the environment when choosing a vehicle" said Mills.
According to the Alberta Governments website, drivers with the number plates will qualify for the high occupancy vehicle lanes even if there is a single occupant in the car, and will have access to recharging facilities at DRIVE Transit parking lots.
What's more, vehicles with the number plates will also have designated parking spots at public buildings and other private companies participating in the scheme.
The number plates are expected to become available in early 2010 and will be available only to drivers who own a vehicle that is a hybrid or battery electric car.
