BANGALORE: Motorists in the city have been warned to stop using designer number plates on their motor vehicles, or face paying a fine for not displaying the registration in a proper format.
Concerned over the increase in violation of Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1993, the city police are planning a special drive to check the display of number plates on vehicles soon after Dasara celebrations.
The police have observed that increasing number of motorists are using designer number plates, which is a flagrant violation of the rules. In this backdrop, the police are planning to crack down on the violators and they will be punished as per the law.
Many number plates in the city are not legible and this has caused problems in cases of hit-and-run accidents because drivers cannot be traced.
Sources claimed that the idea is also to check growing "chain-snatching" incidents in which criminals are using two-wheelers with disguised number plates to carry out their plans. City police have warned all vehicle owners to use legal number plates or face being booked for violations.
