Drivers Hit By Crime

British motorists are at increasing risk of falling victim to vehicle identity theft.

Billions of pounds each year are believed to be made through number plate cloning and related crimes by organised criminal gangs.

As a result, drivers are being urged to thoroughly check out motors before they buy, using a reputable vehicle history check service.

Almost all police forces in Britain report a rise in the thefts of number plates, and estimates suggest that there could already be more than 100,000 cloned cars on the roads.

More than 7.5 million people a year buy a used car, but eight out of 10 buyers rely on the honesty of the seller to find out about the vehicle's past. However, it is estimated that of the 30million cars registered with the DVLA, at least one in six have something to hide.

Each year, about 25,000 dangerous cars are thought to be put back on the road. Many of them are sold to unsuspecting motorists by con-men, who make an estimated £3billion a year from the illegal trade.
