Even as the government makes it mandatory for all its vehicles to display Kannada number plates, two-wheel vehicles will have them on the front only, while the rear plate will be in English.
A gazette notification dated June 22, 2004, does not allow for two-wheelers to sport Kannada number plates at the rear. Citing this notification, the state secretariat had issued a circular in 2000, making Kannada number plates compulsory for all government vehicles. This had followed a recommendation by the Kannada Development Authority.
The notification clarifies the manner in which number plates should be displayed. Two-wheelers will display them on the front left side in English, and on the right in Kannada, while the rear number plate will be in English.
For vehicles other than two-wheelers, the front left plate will be in English, while front right side will be in Kannada. On the rear, the left side will be in English and right side in Kannada.
