A south Phoenix apartment complex is using a surveillance camera to record the number plates of most drivers who come onto the property.
South Point apartments, near 40th Street and Southern Avenue, has programmed one of its 16 security cameras to focus on recording number plates.
It’s a unique way the apartment has found success in helping police track down criminals.
“Most of the time, they've [police] got nothing to go on," said property manager John Taylor. "In our case, we generally have a film of them doing the crime and, if they drive on the property, we've got the number plate of the vehicle they drive, which is information they can use.”
Taylor took over management a few years ago. He said when he first started, the complex was overridden with crime.
“In my first six months we had five vehicles stolen,” said Taylor. “I don’t think we’ve had a vehicle stolen in the past 18 months.”
Taylor credits the cameras and the subsequent arrests because of them.
“What’s happened over time is the bad guys have stopped coming here. We’re too much trouble,” said Taylor.
Tony Marc-Aurele has lived at the apartment for five years. He said he’s noticed how the cameras have cut crime.
“Roughly 75 percent, easy. I know you can't stop it completely but, easily, 75 percent just cause of cameras and warning signs,” said Marc-Aurele.
