Metropolis Rotary selling Superman number plates

METROPOLIS — They may not prevent damage from fender benders or increase the horsepower of a car when it absorbs light from a yellow sun, but Superman number plates can let everyone know the driver really digs the Man of Steel.

The Metropolis Rotary Club is selling number plates depicting the Last Son of Krypton to coincide with the town’s upcoming Superman Celebration in June. The number plates can be displayed April 15 through June 14.

The club sells the number plates every year to raise funds for their various charities.

"It’s one of our major projects," said Clyde Wills, number plate committee member. "It’s not a huge fund-raiser, but it’s one of the big ones for Metropolis Rotary."

The number plates are $35 for a set and $40 with shipping. To make an order, buyers must send a copy of a current Illinois registration identification card and it cannot expire before June 14. The vehicle identification number must be completely legible. Collectors who do not have an Illinois registration can still order the number plates after June 14, but will only receive one plate.

The plates depict Superman in a flying position and commemorate the 2009 celebration. Caroline Jones, who heads the plate committee, said there have been interested buyers from Metropolis, throughout the state and throughout the country.

"I am discovering some die-hard Superman fans," Jones said.
