FORMER Villa boss John Gregory has quashed rumours that he has sold his football-related number plates for half a million pounds.
Gregory, who left Aston Villa in 2004 after four years as manager, said he is proud of the V1LLA plate which he bought during his reign and says he has no plans to sell it on.
The 55-year-old successfully bid for the number plates at auction in 2000 but despite leaving the West Midlands and now living in Berkshire he has kept hold of it.
He said: “I still have the number plates. I bought it in 2000 at auction and by the time I paid for all the extra costs associated with the purchase it cost £44,000.
“I am very proud of the plate it means a lot to me.”
Personalised number plates have become big business since the vehicle licensing authority first introduced them in 1989.
The sale of private number plates has amounted to a total of £1.4 billion and despite the credit crunch DVLA made £82 million in the 12 months to April 2009.
