Wanted criminals will be more likely to be caught when Wokingham borough installs its first Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
The two automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras can read number plates of passing vehicles and check them against wanted lists where they can then be flagged up.
Lead councillor for community safety Rob Stanton said: “These cameras are bad news for criminals and great news for Wokingham borough residents.”
The exact positions of the cameras are yet to be released but major roads in the borough have been suggested.
Total costs for the two cameras come to £45,000 and they are being funded by the Wokingham Borough Safety Partnership.
Inspector Nigel Scarratt of Wokingham Town Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “They are money well spent and another example of excellent partnership work that is going on within the borough, particularly through Wokingham Borough Community Safety Partnership.”
