Plate Builder

Designed to stop car cloning, we are required to see proper and original identification and valid DVLA paperwork to purchase number plates for road use. However, presenting the correct documentation is a simple process.

To comply with UK laws, please send us clear pictures of your ID and DVLA-approved documentation to [email protected].

Accepted documents to purchase registration plates in the UK include -

• Photo I.D (Drivers Licence or Passport) or Utility bill under the name of the person who places the order with Demon Plates.

• A DVLA 'V' document (V5 log book, V7 or eV9) stating the registration you have ordered with Demon Plates.

If you have any questions regarding these documents, please do give us a call to discuss.

To speed up the manufacturing process, we will make your new number plates as soon as we process your payment. We will send them out as soon as we receive the required paperwork and proof of ID.

We provide registration plates, but unless you come to our unit, you will need to fit them. There are a couple of ways to install new number plates: either by sticking them on, or screwing them in.

Our fixing kits contain sticky pads for the simple “stick on” method - you’ll need three pads for each plate. They also have screws and screw caps, for those who want to drill number plates into place. If you drill, clamp the plates down so they can’t move, and drill from the back.

What size are motorbike number plates?

Demon Plates supplies the standard size of bike registration plates, which is 228mm x 178mm (9”x7”).

While there are no precise rules on a plate’s dimensions, the characters it contains must meet specific requirements.

What is the legal requirement for a motorcycle number plate?

As a registered number plate supplier (RNPS), we use a prescribed font, and arrange the letters and numbers in a way that complies with the law. According to rules set by the Driving Licence and Vehicle Authority (DVLA), the characters on a number plate need to be a certain height and size.

For bike number plates, that includes:

  • They must be 64mm tall
  • All characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 44mm wide
  • The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 10mm
  • The space between characters must be 10mm
  • The margins at the top, bottom, and side must be at least 11mm

Like cars, custom motorcycle plates must comply with the latest British Standard number (BS AU 145d until September 2021), which includes a rear plate made of reflective material comprising black characters on a yellow background.

For more information, see DVLA leaflet INF104.

Where should you display a bike number plate?

Motorcycles registered on or after September 1, 2001, must only display a number plate at the rear.

If yours precedes that date, then you can also display a number plate at the front, but do not have to.

Are bike number plates legal on cars?

No, they are not.

Because of their different sizes, and the associated rules that prescribe the required character size and spacing, the rules – as described above – are not the same for car and motorbike registration plates in the UK. That means you cannot display bike plates on a car.

Can I have black bike plates?

Vehicles made before January 1, 1973, may display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates (for example, white, silver, or grey characters on a black plate).

Meanwhile, from April 2020, vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1980, can also display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates.

To do so, you must:

  • Apply to DVLA
  • Be within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class

If you see a modern bike with a black and white number plate, it’s probably not road legal.

Can I put a private plate on my motorbike?

Yes, of course you can.

The rules for transferring a private registration number between vehicles, whether it is a car or motorcycle, are the same.

The DVLA will charge you a number plate transfer fee, determined by whether the number you want to transfer is already on an existing vehicle, is on retention, or on a Certificate of Entitlement.

If it is the former, you must apply to the DVLA using a V317 form.

What are 4D number plates?

A 4D text number plate has a raised style of font. These are usually 3mm deep and made from laser-cut acrylic characters attached with a water-resistant adhesive.

The plate itself looks like any other. The black digits make it stand out, achieving an attractive appearances. At Demon Plates, our skilled team prides itself on delivering a precise, smooth finish that meets the highest industry standards.

Are 4D number plates legal?

Yes!

That is, of course, if approved plate makers like Demon Plates use a font, and arrange the letters and numbers, in a way that complies with the law. According to rules set by the Driving Licence and Vehicle Authority (DVLA).

That means personalised ‘4D’ number plates are fully road legal and meet the latest British Standard number (BS AU 145d until September 2021) which mandates the required specification of every number plate.

How much do 4D reg plates cost?

Because ‘4D Perspex’ is a text style, the price for your plates can vary.

When you select different sizes, borders, and badges, it will affect the cost accordingly.

Since December 2020, eligible vehicles in the UK have been able to fit green number plates.

Part of a Government initiative to clean up road transport and reduce emissions during a transition to all-electric options, they are an easy way to identify zero-emission vehicles.

However, the plates themselves aren’t a different colour to conventional registration plates; instead, they have a green stripe on the left-hand side.

Can I put a green number plate on my car?

Only vehicles with zero CO2 emissions from the tailpipe are eligible for green number plates.
If yours meets the criteria, then you can retrofit them.

This includes battery-electric cars, vans, taxis and motorcycles, and cars fitted with hydrogen fuel cells.

Hybrids, including plug-in hybrids, do not qualify, and nor do low-emission petrol or diesel vehicles.

Do all electric vehicles have green number plates?

No, they don’t.

Following a consultation that invited comments from the public, local authorities and industry stakeholders, the Government decided green number plates should be ‘non-mandatory’ and ‘opt out’.

If you’re buying a new electric vehicle, the dealership will probably fit green number plates as standard – or at the very least it will ask if you’d like them instead of conventional number plates.

However, because they are not compulsory, people can choose not to have green number plates if they wish.

Where can I buy green number plates?

From Demon Plates, of course!

Our number plate builder includes an option for customers to buy ‘Electric Car Plates’.

While the green flash on the left-hand side helps them stand out, green number plates must comply with the existing regulations for their size and font type or spacing.

You can combine them with the UK’s national flags and identifying letters that occupy that area of the plate.

Demon Plates do not manufacture show plates.

We only create new and replacement road legal bike and car number plates.

No. If you wish to have a set of private number plates made for your motor, you must own that registration number, and email us the required ID and DVLA paperwork. The DVLA must assign personal number plates, which must not be modified or transferred to new vehicles.

We can’t send out finished plates until we have the right ID and documentation.

All our number plates are made to order as soon as we receive the correct paperwork.

Providing we don’t meet any obstacles, we despatch them on the same – or next – working day from our base in Manchester.

We offer a variety of different sized plates for various vehicle types and shapes.

They include:

  • Square 4x4 (280mm x 203mm)
  • Large rear 21x6 (535mm x 152mm)
  • Motorcycle plates (228mm x 178mm)

If you cannot see the size that you want, then please ask.

We’re happy to create a custom plate shape or size that will display your registration number according to the legal requirements.

Personalise your new or replacement reg plate with more flair and protect it by purchasing our plate surrounds. We offer three different styles. You can also choose country flags, religious symbols, and other badge designs, as well as 4D Perspex, and domed text.

These services are all available for both front and rear registration plates.
