Number plates stolen by 'trophy hunters'

JUVENILE 'trophy hunters' are reckoned to be behind a spate of thefts of car number plates in Brixham.

Eighteen pairs of number plates were ripped off vehicles in one night alone.

And now police are anxious to hear from parents who may have noticed the stolen plates on show in youngsters' bedrooms.

The number plates were stolen overnight on May 22/23 and a further two were taken the following night in the port.

DC Ben Shardlow, of Torquay CID, said BMWs, Mazdas and Skodas were among those targeted.

"We would also appeal to parents to keep an eye open for a sudden appearance of car number plates in the home," he said.

"We believe these plates are being taken as trophies by youngsters. It has only been happening in the last week."

He said in some cases vehicles had lost both their front and rear number plates.

No CCTV cameras are thought to have captured any untoward behaviour around parked cars in the areas raided and no one has reported seeing suspicious behaviour.
