Keep front number plates urge police

Oregon's law requiring front number plates on vehicles is coming under scrutiny in an attempt to save the state money. It is thought that over $2 million a year in costs would be saved by eliminating the number plates.

However Traffic Officers are against the idea because they say front number plates can be a valuable tool in identifying vehicles used in all manner of crimes.

One advocate of getting rid of front number plates, Paul Ainsworth, pointed out states adjacent to Oregon who don't have the back and front number plates law. However in those states law enforcement officers are pushing for a change in the law.

In the past the only way front number plates could help solve crimes was if they were actually seen and noted down. New ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology has made the front plates a valuable possible tool for police to identify vehicles.
