Senate approves new number plates

North Dakota's number plates may have a new look beginning next year.

The state Senate voted 37-10 to issue new number plates to every car, truck, motorcycle and trailer. Lawmakers last approved a new number plates issue in 1991.

The bill would allow the state to charge a one-time fee of $5 per registration for the new number plates. It now goes to the House.

State transportation officials say they would hold a public contest to find a design. It would cost more than $4 million to make and distribute the plates.
