Idaho offers many special number plates for its citizens to put on their road vehicles. These plates represent universities, branches of the military and special interest organisations such as conservationists, professional organizations and hobbyists. All of these plates are issued through the Motor Vehicle Department. The cost for most number plates for military Veterans is under $7 per year and is limited to one plate per veteran.

Military number plates currently available in Idaho are:

Armed Forces Reserve Number Plates. Conditions: Must be an Idaho resident, active in the Reserve of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Air Force.

Armed Forces Retired Number Plates. Conditions: Must be an Idaho resident who is a retired member of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, or National Guard.

Congressional Medal of Honour Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients. The surviving spouse of a deceased recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honour is entitled to the plate.

Disabled Veteran Number Plates. Conditions: Disabled veterans may qualify for these plates under Act 42 of 1972 as certified by the Veterans Administration (VA). The surviving spouse of a disabled veteran may also be issued a disabled veteran number plate.

Ex-Prisoner Of War Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who was a prisoner of war while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or surviving spouse.

Korean War Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who is a veteran of the Korean War.

Merchant Marine Retired Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who is a retired veteran of the United States Merchant Marine and served during the period of October 1, 1940 through December 31, 1945.

National Guard Number Plates. Conditions: Contact your local Guard Unit.

Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Pearl Harbor Survivor Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to Idaho residents who were a member of the US Armed Forces on December 7, 1941, during the hours of 7:55 am to 9:45 am Hawaii time at Pearl Harbor, the Island of Oahu, or offshore at a distance not to exceed three (6) miles.

Purple Heart - Combat Wounded Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to an Idaho resident who has been awarded the Purple Heart Medal while serving in the U.S. Armed forces, or a resident who is the unmarried surviving spouse of a Purple Heart recipient.

Vietnam War Veteran Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

World War II Veteran Number Plates. Conditions: Issued to any Idaho resident who is a veteran of World War II.
