How to Order a Replacement Plate for a Caravan or Trailer

If your caravan or trailer number plate is damaged, faded, lost or missing, replacing it starts with checking the registration you need, the available mounting space and the documents required to order.

For ordinary UK towing, your caravan or trailer must display the same registration as the towing vehicle. From there, measure the plate area, choose a suitable replacement and prepare your documents. This guide explains each step, including what to check before ordering and fitting your new plate securely.

Step 1: Check Which Registration Number You Need

Infographic explaining how to check the correct vehicle registration number, plate size and details before ordering a replacement number plate.

For ordinary UK towing, your caravan or trailer must display the same registration number as the vehicle towing it. If you change towing vehicles, check the plate matches the vehicle currently in use.

This matters when buying a used caravan or trailer. A plate left by the previous owner may still show their vehicle's registration and will need replacing before you tow it.

In normal UK use, the registration comes from the towing vehicle rather than the caravan itself. Once you have confirmed the correct registration, you can explore suitable caravan number plates.

Step 2: Measure the Available Number Plate Space

Measure the available mounting area before ordering, especially where rear lights, handles, bodywork or existing fixing points restrict the space.

Check:

  • the available width and height

  • the position of existing fixing holes or mounting points

  • nearby lights, trim, handles and other fittings

If the existing plate fits correctly, measuring it can provide a useful starting point. Do not assume an old plate is automatically the right specification, particularly on a second-hand caravan or trailer.

Take accurate measurements rather than choosing a plate from appearance alone. Our number plate size guide provides further guidance when comparing formats.

Step 3: Choose the Correct Plate Size and Shape

Choose a plate that suits the available mounting area while allowing the registration to be displayed correctly. Limited space does not allow characters to be altered or incorrectly spaced to make a registration fit.

This distinction matters on caravans and trailers with restricted areas between rear light clusters or other fittings. Measure first, then compare suitable formats rather than starting with a preferred shape and trying to make it fit.

The aim is a plate that works with the available mounting area without compromising how the registration is displayed.

Step 4: Order From a Registered Number Plate Supplier

Road-use registration plates must come from a registered number plate supplier. The supplier must check your identity and confirm your entitlement to use the registration before making the plate.

These checks are a legal part of the ordering process. Registered suppliers also have obligations covering the plates they produce and the records they keep.

This matters when comparing a specialist supplier with an unverified marketplace seller. Price or appearance should not replace the required checks. Read more about choosing a number plate manufacturer before placing your order.

Step 5: Have Your Documents Ready

Vehicle paperwork, car keys, a laptop and a checklist arranged on a desk ready for ordering a replacement number plate.

A registered supplier needs evidence of your identity and entitlement to use the registration. Have suitable documents ready before ordering to avoid delays.

Proof of Your Name and Address

Accepted evidence can include a driving licence, qualifying utility or Council Tax bill, recent bank or building society statement, or national identity card. Check which documents meet your circumstances.

Proof You Can Use the Registration

You also need evidence linking you to the registration. Examples include a V5C vehicle registration certificate, green new keeper slip, V750 certificate of entitlement or V778 retention document.

Check the documents needed to order number plates before starting your order.

Step 6: Check the Plate Details Before Ordering

Check every detail before submitting your order. A small entry or measurement error can leave you with a replacement plate that does not suit its intended use.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • every character in the registration

  • the plate dimensions

  • the intended layout

  • where and how the plate will be mounted

  • the plate is suitable for its intended road use

Pay particular attention when replacing a plate on a recently purchased caravan or trailer. Copying the previous owner's registration instead of the current towing vehicle's registration is an easy mistake to avoid.

Step 7: Choose How You Will Fix the Plate to the Caravan or Trailer

Choose a secure fixing method suited to the mounting surface, existing fixing points and plate. Plan the installation before ordering any additional fittings.

An existing plate can provide useful clues. Check how it was mounted and inspect the area for damaged holes, failed adhesive or unsuitable previous fixings.

Avoid assuming one method works for every caravan or trailer body. Construction and mounting surfaces vary, and drilling without understanding what sits behind the panel can cause avoidable damage.

Whatever method you use, the finished plate needs to remain secure and clearly visible.

Step 8: Fit the Replacement Plate and Check It Is Clearly Visible

Fit the replacement securely at the rear of your caravan or trailer, then check the registration is correctly displayed and clearly visible.

View the plate from behind rather than only checking it close up. Make sure fittings, accessories or other equipment do not obstruct any characters. If towing more than one trailer, the towing vehicle's number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.

Before setting off, check the plate remains secure around its mounting points. This final inspection can identify loose fixings, movement or visibility problems before they cause an issue on the road.

What If You Are Taking the Trailer or Caravan Abroad?

Some trailers used for international journeys must be separately registered with DVLA and display their own trailer registration plate in addition to the towing vehicle's plate. This is a different system from ordering an ordinary replacement caravan or trailer plate.

Current GOV.UK guidance states that trailers over 750kg must be registered when travelling to or through most European countries, apart from Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain. A trailer travelling through a country where registration is required may still need registration when the final destination is one of those exceptions.

A registered trailer receives its own trailer registration number. Where the rules apply, its registration plate is displayed separately from the towing vehicle's number plate. GOV.UK advises placing the trailer registration plate at the back, as far away as possible from the towing vehicle's plate. Alternative positioning rules apply where rear mounting is not possible.

Check the current requirements for every country on your route before travelling rather than treating your normal UK towing plate as the only registration consideration.

Ready to Order a Replacement Caravan or Trailer Plate?

Once you have confirmed the towing vehicle's registration, measured the available mounting area and prepared the required documents, you have the key information needed to choose your replacement.

Before ordering, make one final check:

  • Registration: Does it match the towing vehicle?

  • Fit: Have you measured the available mounting area?

  • Documents: Do you have suitable identity and entitlement evidence?

You can then explore Demon Plates' caravan number plates or trailer number plates according to your towing setup. When you know what you need and have your documents prepared, you can order replacement number plates through the plate builder.
